Our
organization was specifically founded to assess and
address the need for expanded recreational
facilities in Payson – a community center with
indoor aquatics and a gymnasium. In the process,
we have expanded our activities beyond that initial
goal and been able to augment the Town’s Parks and
Recreation programs in many other ways, as
exemplified by the
Scholarship Fund Program.
During
the last three years we have actively pursued a
partnership with the Valley of the Sun YMCA to build
such a community center in Payson. The planned
partnership with the Town of Payson, the YMCA and
other potential partners envisions combining needs
and resources to provide more indoor recreational
space and more programs for people of all ages in
this community. The YMCA is a leader in
programming, with proven success in evaluating
existing programs and developing expanded
opportunities for everyone.
We have
not abandoned the vision of building a state of the
art YMCA, with indoor pool, here in Payson. Proper
planning will avoid the pitfalls and mistakes other
communities have made. The process is slow; but our
efforts have paid off so far. We have great
confidence the funds to build a Payson YMCA are
available through private donors. And we are
convinced this community will wholeheartedly support
a YMCA in Payson without any financial liability to
the town.
It is
imperative that a decision be made by the members of
this community: How important is it that the Town
of Payson provide more indoor recreation facilities
and programs for our youth, family and senior
citizens?
We
encourage everyone to devote some thought to this
simple fact: Payson’s existing recreation programs
are bursting at the seams, either unable to secure
space or program leaders to accommodate everyone who
wants to participate. Summer youth programs fill up
quickly; waiting lists are the norm. Basketball
teams share cramped and over-used quarters. Kids
who want to learn to swim do not have the
opportunity because the pool is only open in the
summer and the classes can only accommodate so many
students.
The
list of needs grows. Our question is how important
is this to you? Don’t you think our youth, families
and senior citizens deserve adequate recreation
facilities to initiate and maintain community spirit
and a healthy lifestyle? Isn’t that one of the
roles of local government? How important is it to
you? Let us know; send us your comments, join our
group – volunteer to be a leader in bringing the
YMCA to Payson.
